How many studs do I need for a wall?
The number of studs depends on your wall length and stud spacing. For a 12-foot wall with 16" spacing, you'll need approximately 10 studs (including corners). Our calculator does this automatically for you.
What is the standard stud spacing?
The most common stud spacing is 16 inches on-center (OC) for residential construction. This provides adequate support for drywall, sheathing, and standard loads while being cost-effective.
How many plates do I need?
A standard wall requires 3 plates: one bottom plate (sole plate) and two top plates. The total length equals your wall length multiplied by 3.
Do I need extra studs for doors and windows?
Yes! Openings require additional framing: king studs, jack studs (cripples), and headers. Each door/window typically adds 4-6 extra studs.
What's the difference between 2x4 and 2x6 framing?
2x4 framing (3.5" deep) is standard for interior walls. 2x6 (5.5" deep) is used for exterior walls to allow more insulation space, providing better energy efficiency.
How much extra material should I account for?
It's recommended to add 10-15% extra for waste, cuts, and mistakes. For studs, add 1-2 extra; for plates, add 5-10% extra length.
What is a cripple stud?
Cripple studs are short studs used above doors/windows (between header and top plate) or below windows (between sill and bottom plate). They provide structural support around openings.
