To calculate how much crushed stone you need: multiply the length × width × depth (in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Our calculator does this automatically for you!

Multiply cubic yards by the density factor (typically 1.4 tons per cubic yard). Most crushed stone weighs between 1.2 and 1.6 tons per cubic yard.

The required depth depends on the use: walkways: 2-3 inches, driveways: 4-6 inches, base for pavers: 4-6 inches, drainage: 6-12 inches. For most landscaping projects, 2-4 inches is sufficient.
Crushed stone is mechanically crushed from larger rocks, giving it angular edges that lock together for stability. Gravel is naturally formed by water erosion, making it smoother and more rounded. Crushed stone is typically better for driveways and foundations because it compacts better.

Multiply cubic yards by the material's density (weight per cubic yard). For crushed stone, the average density is 1.4 tons per cubic yard. So: Cubic Yards × 1.4 = Tons needed.
For driveways, #57 stone (1" - 1.5") is commonly used as a base layer, with #8 stone (1/2" - 3/4") as a top layer. Crusher run (3/4" down to dust) is also excellent because it compacts well and creates a solid surface.
