Frequently Asked Questions
How is catch rate calculated?
The catch rate formula is: Catch Probability = 1 - (1 - a / 255)^(3/4), where 'a' is the modified catch rate. The modified catch rate is calculated using: a = (3 × Max HP - 2 × Current HP) × (Base Catch Rate × Ball Multiplier × Status Multiplier) / (3 × Max HP). The result is then converted to a percentage.
What does the shake count mean?
The shake count represents how many times the Poké Ball shakes before the Pokémon is caught or breaks free. A maximum of 4 shakes indicates a successful catch. The number of shakes is determined by comparing random numbers against the catch probability - more shakes mean a higher chance of capture.
Which Poké Ball has the highest catch rate?
The Master Ball has a 255x multiplier, guaranteeing a catch 100% of the time. Among regular balls, the conditions matter: Quick Ball (5x) is best on the first turn, Timer Ball (4x) is best after many turns, and Dusk Ball (3x) is best in caves or at night. Ultra Ball provides a consistent 2x multiplier in any situation.
How does HP affect catch rate?
Lower HP significantly increases catch rate. The formula uses (3 × Max HP - 2 × Current HP), meaning the catch rate is highest when the Pokémon has 1 HP. At full HP, this term is 3 × Max HP - 2 × Max HP = 1 × Max HP. At 1 HP, it's approximately 3 × Max HP, making the catch rate about 3 times higher.
What's the best status condition for catching?
Sleep and Freeze are the best status conditions, providing a 2.5x multiplier to catch rate. Paralyze, Poison, and Burn provide a 1.5x multiplier. Sleep/Freeze are preferred because they last longer and don't cause damage that could faint the Pokémon.
Does the calculator account for Shiny Pokémon?
Shiny Pokémon have the same catch rate as their normal counterparts. The only difference is their appearance, not their capture difficulty. The calculator works the same for both shiny and non-shiny Pokémon.
