Frequently Asked Questions

How many concrete blocks do I need per square foot?

A standard 8"×8"×16" block (including 3/8" mortar joint) covers approximately 1.125 square feet. Formula: 1 / (height in feet × length in feet). For standard blocks: 1 / (0.67 × 1.33) ≈ 1.125 blocks per sq ft.

How do you calculate the number of blocks for a wall?

Step 1: Calculate wall area (Length × Height)

Step 2: Subtract openings (doors, windows)

Step 3: Multiply by blocks per square foot (1.125 for 8" blocks)

Step 4: Add 5-10% waste factor

How much mortar do I need per block?

A standard 80lb bag of mortar covers approximately 35-40 blocks for a single wythe wall. For a 20'×4' wall (80 sq ft), you'll need about 90 blocks and 3 bags of mortar.

What is the standard concrete block size?

The most common concrete block size is 8"×8"×16" (nominal). Actual dimensions are 7-5/8" × 7-5/8" × 15-5/8" to account for 3/8" mortar joints. Other sizes include 4", 6", 10", and 12" widths.

How much sand and cement for block wall mortar?

For Type S mortar (common for block walls), mix 1 part cement, 1/2 part lime, and 4.5 parts sand. For estimating, 1 cubic foot of mortar covers about 12 blocks. Our calculator provides approximate quantities.

How many blocks do I need for a 10x10 wall?

A 10'×10' wall (100 sq ft) requires approximately:

  • 8" blocks: ~112 blocks (including 10% waste)
  • 4" blocks: ~112 blocks
  • 12" blocks: ~112 blocks (same surface area)

How much does a concrete block weigh?

Concrete block weights vary by size:

  • 4" block: ~20-25 lbs
  • 6" block: ~30-35 lbs
  • 8" block (standard): ~35-40 lbs
  • 10" block: ~45-50 lbs
  • 12" block: ~55-60 lbs

Do I need rebar in a block wall?

Rebar is required for retaining walls and foundation walls over 4 feet tall. For garden walls under 3 feet, rebar is optional. Standard reinforcement includes vertical rebar every 32-48 inches and horizontal rebar every 2-3 courses.
