Frequently Asked Questions

How is the AP Statistics exam scored?

The AP Statistics exam has two sections: Multiple Choice (40 questions, 50% of score) and Free Response (6 questions, 50% of score). Each FRQ is scored 0-4, for a total of 24 raw points. The raw scores are converted to a composite score out of 100, then to a final AP score of 1-5.

What is the AP Statistics passing score?

A score of 3 or higher is considered passing. Approximately 60-65% of test-takers typically score 3 or higher. A score of 4 or 5 is considered very strong and often qualifies for college credit.

What calculator can I use on the AP Statistics exam?

You may use any graphing calculator approved by the College Board, including TI-84, TI-Nspire, Casio, and HP models. You cannot share calculators during the exam.

Do I get partial credit on FRQs?

Yes! Each FRQ is scored on a 4-point rubric with partial credit awarded for correct components. Even if you don't get the final answer right, you can earn points for correct methodology, assumptions, and interpretation.

What formulas are provided on the exam?

The College Board provides a formula sheet with all necessary formulas for probability, sampling distributions, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests. You don't need to memorize formulas!
